Ishmael's assault plan

Historians have only one official document at their disposal that can serve as a source for studying and analyzing the plan of the assault — this is the so-called Suvorov disposition. Published in 1819 by F. Glinka in a collection of documents written by Suvorov, it, according to the publisher, presents precious fragments of the assault plan found in the papers of the great commander and allegedly compiled by him personally. The disposition does not have a date for its compilation and it is unknown whether it was one of the variants of the assault plan or whether it was a valid disposition according to which the assault was being prepared and carried out.


Most historians accept this document as the main version of the disposition, and this, I think, is really true. The correctness of this view is confirmed by the fact that the preparation and course of the assault went mainly according to the plan outlined in the mentioned document. Of course, it is quite possible that after the preparation of the disposition, some minor amendments could have been made to it, but they did not change the basic idea of the plan. There is also no doubt that these amendments were transmitted to the performers orally on the spot and were not written into the new document. Thus, it is almost safe to say that this option is the only one, or at least the last one, that has been set out in writing. According to him, the plan of the assault should be studied.


Even with a cursory reading of the text of the disposition, the peculiarity of its construction cannot fail to catch the eye. With what seriousness and foresight Suvorov approached the assessment and accounting of every detail that could affect the course of preparation and the battle and the battle itself. The text is divided into three parts: the first is a kind of preparation plan for the assault, the second is the order of the assault (the actual disposition) and the third is the additions that were made after the main text was compiled. Let's take a closer look at the contents of this wonderful document.


As we mentioned above, the Russians had little field artillery. Suvorov therefore decided to use it mainly on the flanks of the fortress; for this purpose, he ordered two batteries, each with 10 guns, to be erected against the flank bastions. The construction of long-term batteries was supposed, according to the commander's plan, to inspire the enemy with the idea of an impending prolonged siege, while in fact the batteries were supposed to take an active part in the artillery preparation of the assault, mainly on the flank bastions of the fortress.


The plan was completed completely and on time due to a clear and thoughtful organization of work and its combat support. Regarding artillery training, two points should be noted: first, powerful concentrated artillery fire on the Tabiya redoubt and the palisade running from it to the river ("here, in addition to coastal batteries, 8 specially designated bomber vessels "with 8 three-poop ones should fire from 2 a.m. guns and 8 two-pounder unicorns"); secondly, artillery firing until 6 a.m. was to be carried out with cannonballs, and after that, before dawn, with blank charges.
