Movie review of The Killer (Sicario)

In the era of zombie movies, superhero comic book characters, and teen fiction adaptations, we somehow lost sight of the genre that was the main one in the 90s of the last century, namely the well-choreographed action movie. With all due respect, this year neither "007: Spectrum" nor "Mission Impossible: Rogue Nation" were able to show themselves as a true representative of this genre. Each of the above films had more adventures than the most classic action. In order to become the main action movie of 2015, the second film directed by Denis Villeneuve, "The Murderer" or "Sicario", has reached wide distribution in Ukraine.

The plot of the film is complexly branched and tells about four stories at once: a policeman father and his child, the heroine Emily Blunt and her joining a special squad, the hero Benicio Del Toro and his "work", and the character Josh Brolin. Each of the lines ultimately has its own finality and moral. Each one smoothly intersects with other stories. For some, the "path" will end with a couple of bullets in the body, and for others - a reward for their efforts. The main thing is that the film does not forget about any of the characters, it completes all the plot "threads", gives an emotional and logical ending, pleases the viewer with a sense of completeness.

Each of the characters has his own philosophy, morality and life values. There is a police officer who is as honest as possible, and a man who lives with a sense of revenge for his family, and just a hardworking man who loves what he does. Thanks to both the screenwriters and the actors for this. Each of them gives his best. You believe every word of the main characters, every action and movement. You won't find an ounce of falseness or unnecessary "acting" in the work of Blunt, Brolin or Del Toro, even if you dislike the actors themselves.

But it is worth admitting that in addition to all the positive qualities, the film also has minor flaws: there is a "tightening" and "sagging" of the second half in the picture. The pace that builds up in the first hour of the film quickly subsides and begins to slow down smoothly towards the finale, instead of the desired rapid peak in the last ten minutes. This is not to say that this drop is too significant, and the film becomes boring to watch, but the interest fades a little.

The horror of the Mexican cartels and their criminal activities are perfectly conveyed almost from the first frames. Already in the fifth minute of the film, the viewer is shown corpses wrapped in polyethylene between the walls of the building. After that, they are "fed" with severed limbs and heads. Then they show the beating of a woman, constant threats and insults of the heroine Blunt. Well, the lifeless people on the gallows are included here. With every passing minute and until the very end, the film puts more and more pressure on the viewer by the fact that there is no hope or "light at the end of the tunnel" in the world of "Sicario". There is nothing here but horror and fear.

As you can see, the atmosphere of the film is not suitable for every viewer. Many people will just feel uncomfortable and disgusting. Constant violence, swearing, corpses, and torture are taken for granted here.

"Sicario" is a dark world of modern realities. This is a film with a well-crafted atmosphere, great acting and excellent direction. If we compare it with Villeneuve's previous project ("Captives"), we can say that this is something completely different by all criteria. There is no place for love, hope, friendship and a "happy ending". There is only a frightening bleakness, realism and the truth about who people are. Who each of us is deep in our souls. ma chance casino
