Current collectors

The age composition of turning grouse has been little studied and insufficiently covered in the literature. While studying the ecology of chicken birds in Western Siberia (1949-1954), I managed to collect factual material on the age composition of the killer whales on the currents in Baraba. Based on these data, we can make some suggestions about the so-called "currents".

In early spring, full-grown grouse are mainly tending; they are the first to begin mating games and songs. Kosachi, who have not reached the age of one year, are included in mating games and songs a little later. And only in the midst of currents do young people flow almost on a par with adults. At that time, on 7 tokovishch, I selectively shot 30 eagerly muttering and chuffing killer whales, of which 17 were adults and 13 were young (last year's output). The testicles of birds of both age groups were 2-2.5 times larger than those of grouse harvested outside the breeding season: 15.6—22.8 mm versus 7.6—10.1 mm. In late spring and early summer, when grouse currents are already fading, both young and adult males sing on them.

The adult killer whales are the first to arrive at the tokovishche, they begin to chuff and mutter; a little later, the young ones join them. The latter often do not stay in the center of the current, but on its outskirts, or mutter while sitting on nearby trees, and then only descend to the current. Sometimes young grouse continue to stream on trees all morning, or settle on the ground near previously selected trees somewhat away from the main stream (usually in cases when grouse are planted on these trees). But more often than not, the young ones, as the currents develop, cluster on the main current, arriving here after the adults or a little later.

In the spring, young black grouse wear the rite they received in the first autumn of their life as a result of post-juvenile molting, and they differ well from older ones.

On April 30, 1954, at a current in Baraba, from 4:10 a.m. to 5:45 a.m., I shot 7 out of 24 grouse that arrived at the current site at different times. The two captured roosters, who were the first to start chuffing and muttering, turned out to be adult, large birds (weighing 1560 and 1590 g) and had testes 21.9 and 18.9 mm long. The remaining five were one-year-old (or rather eleven-month-old) males, also quite large (weight 1400, 1350, 1400, 1350 and 1420 g) with testes 16.7, 18.1, 18.2, 17.9 and 19.3 mm long; they flew to the trunk from the nearest trees an hour or more after the old ones began to flow on it. males.

Since the time of A. P. Sabaneyev, there has been a widespread opinion in hunting literature about the presence of "tokoviks", who are also supposedly the leaders of winter packs. It is believed that there is one current collector on each current — the oldest mower, which is the first to start current in the spring and "opens the current" every morning with its chuffing; that it is enough for such a current collector to die so that this current disintegrates. This opinion could have been confirmed as a result of insufficiently accurate observations.

The fact is that at the beginning of the morning current on large currents, grouse located on the outskirts of the current and in the trees begin muttering (often in unison) only after the song is heard in the center of the current. It's easy to observe. It is much more difficult to notice which killer whale starts the song first. It is simply impossible to prove by visual observation that the same bird makes the first chirp every morning: this is a guess. It is possible to explain this picture of the beginning of the morning current without resorting to the help of "current meters".

Selective shooting of flocking birds shows that adults are located in the center of the current, and young ones are located on the outskirts. Since the former have more sexual activity, they are the first to start current. In the four cases already mentioned, the shooting of the "currents" I carried out did not lead to the ruin of any of the currents; it did not even interrupt the current flow for an hour. In addition, observations show that quite often, especially in the evenings, males flock to the bullfight not alone, but in groups of 2-3 or even 5 individuals, with several killer whales starting the song at once. Thus, detailed observations in the forest-steppe forest make it possible to conclude that there are no special "currents" on the current, at least in birds of the specified area.

Reports from hunters about specific observations on currents in various geographical areas of our country will help resolve these issues of interest to hunting and zoological science.
